Located in Mie prefecture, in a wide bay on the East coast of Japan, the town of Ise houses the Ise Shrine, one of the most important Shrines of Japan. This famous Shrine is divided in two parts, located some kilometers apart each other: Geku, the Outer Shrine, is dedicated to Toyomuke, the God of House; Naiku, or Inner Shrine, is dedicated to Amaterasu the Goddess of Sun. The Ise Shrines are built in a purely Japanese architecture style which shows no influence from the Asian mainland, and they are both rebuilt every 20 years according to an ancient Shinto tradition. Next rebuilding will take place in 2013.
Beside the two shrines, other
attractions can be seen in Ise and its surrounding area. Meteo Iwa, two sacred
rocks, stands on the ocean in a small town called Futami. The two rocks represent husband and wife and are connected by a shimenawa rope, a yellow rope used to mark sacred objects like trees, stones and shrines. The Okitama Shrine stands nearby.
Another attraction consists in Edo Wonderland,
located in Futaminoura (between Ise and Futami).
This theme park provide a glimpse of Japan during the Azuchi Momoyama Period of Japanese history, when the samurai ruled the country.
